Memorial Day is based on unpredictable weather, unpredictable behavior, and unpredictable actions, in honor of the unpredictable results of war. Americans are supposed to honor fallen heroes in one of two ways: doing morally honorable family stuff with kids, or doing morally irresponsible and immature stuff with friends. If you are very lucky, you can fit in both efforts during the weekend. Since I have no kids, I put in extra effort on the immature stuff to make up for those who could not find the time to do their share.

Bah-humbug on the 'happy' part (see post on newbie bulletin board regarding my mind numbing, alcohol soaked, Creole-spiced weekend). Memorial Day is not supposed to be happy or joyous. I know, because otherwise there would be a Hallmark card with a holiday symbol. How come Easter gets a bunny, Christmas gets Santa, Thanksgiving gets a fat turkey, Fourth of July gets a small rocket with a fuse coming out its butt, and Memorial Day gets a boring flag? Oh well, at least Memorial Day gets something. Labor Day really was screwed. You would think the ‘Holiday Union, Local 122’ (which I think is associated with the Teamsters) would have gotten a better package for Labor Day, but then again, maybe there was intent not to upstage any of the other Days. Nevertheless, come on, if the Day rates high enough to anchor a three day weekend, there should be a symbol!

By the way, YES, I did have a very enjoyable day. Thanks for the considerate thoughts.

Did you know that there is a new holiday on March 14th? I wonder if that one will ever get national recognition...

If you don't get the day off, it ain't a real holiday, unless the bars are especially busy, then it is a quasi-holiday, which means you can imbibe heavily after work and need not make up an excuse, nor are you required to spend time with family members from a generation other than your own (older or younger), unless they are also drinking comparable quantities of libations.

Examples: Sweetest Day, St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, First Day of Deer Hunting, Game 7 of any championship in which your team participates (whether they win or lose), Mardi Gras, Last Day of Deer Hunting, and Fridays (the day, not the restaurant).
